Neighbours Day – 26-27 March 2011

Hurihia nga ara hei tui I te ata noho a te tangata - turning streets into neighbourhoods

Background

Neighbours Day Aotearoa started in Auckland in 2009 with  the principles and experience of the Know Your Neighbours Project, an initiative by a Takapuna Methodist Church and LIFEWISE partnership. Working alongside streets and neighbourhoods, they discovered that many residents were keen to know their neighbours better, but sometimes wanted support to know where to start and encouragement to take action.

The message of ‘know your neighbours’ connects across different ages, ethnicities, cultures, and geographical locations and is relevant for all of us because strong neighbourhoods are crucial to a healthy, happy, and sustainable New Zealand.  These principles complement the Neighbourhood Support movement, which  puts a focus on  safety in the neighbourhood.

Successful campaigns similar to Neighbours Day have run in other countries.  Inspiring Communities took a lead role in expanding Neighbours Day across Aotearoa.  Read more of the background from Neighbours Day Aotearoa in Why Neighbours Day and in the Getting Started Guide.

Ideas for Celebrating Neighbours Day

Neighbours Day is a time to get together with your neighbours in a way that suits you  – have a BBQ, host an afternoon tea, share food, have a street party, or just knock on your neighbour’s door and introduce yourself!

Mt Cook Mobilised – Goodie Basket

Mt Cook Mobilised has got together with local businesses to come up with a Goodie Basket prize draw for Neighbours Day.  No matter how  big or small your  Neighbours Day activity, as long as you live in Mt Cook and are organising something for Neighbours Day, you can enter your get-together in the draw.  To enter, email mtcookmobilised@gmail.com by noon on Friday 25th March, don’t forget to include your contact phone number, details of how you will be celebrating Neighbours Day, and the name of your  neighbourhood.  The prize with be drawn Friday evening.  Look out for the posters around Mt Cook.

Goodie Basket Sponsors

We have prizes donated by locals - fantastic homegrown, organic pears, frozen raspberries, a chocolicious chocolate cake and some chutney.

Our commercial sponsors fall into three categories – things to eat, donated by Southern Cross Garden:Bar:Restaurant, Supreme Coffee, Ballroom Café, Hell’s Pizza , Martha’s Kitchen, Basin Noodle House and Mt Cook Cafe. Sponsors Having their own Neighbours Day Events

Mt Cook Café is serving up delicious carrot cake for Mt Cookies who turn up  with their neighbours, outside in the Mt Cook Cafe courtyard (Sunday 27 March 2pm – 4pm).

Visit one of our museums with your neighbours over the weekend of 26-27 March and the Colonial Cottage Museum will give away 3-D pop-up models of the cottage, great for kids.  The NZ Cricket Museum under the old grandstand at the Basin will discount entry prices.

Hells Pizza on Webb Street will give away a ‘mini’ goodie bag to Mt Cookies celebrating Neighbours Day.

Mini Cookies, a Mt Cook preschool group, are planning a BBQ at the Mt Cook Playground on Hutchison Road.
